Alphonse Areola was brilliant for West Ham against Brighton and would have made my team under normal circumstances, but what Liverpool achieved at St James' Park was extraordinary - and that is why Alisson makes my team.

That is what Crooks wrote not what Iron Duke alleged.

As for Crooks he spreads the love and WHU players have been in his best of the week selections already.

Rashford got in as always. All he did was dive and get skinned by the Forest CF for the first goal.

I saw that, not tippy tappy enough are we? Thought one of Antonio, Areola or Bowen would have got in there but Crooks is football genius so probably knows best.

Alisson.

This is what Crooks said:

I’m told that Alphonse Areola was brilliant for West Ham against Brighton and would have made my team under normal circumstances, but I didn’t bother watching that game, and Areola doesn’t play for Liverpool - and that is why Alisson makes my team.

Because we played as a team, Areola stood out, who was the goalie pick?

Good to see not a single West Ham player made Garth Crooks team of the week.

Super result and it good have been more as both Bowen and Antonio missed easier chances then the ones they scored. The one Bowen did score IMO is a candidate for goal of thr season. Not that it will be. Simple in its telling
if not in its execution two quick passes, excellent control at speed and rolled into the net. Both efficient and effective. When don't give the ball away cheaply we are a force to be reconned with.

Moyes should have started that way probably thought about it, but as per couldn't leave Soucek out, without the injury we don't score that goal. More interested in keeping goals out than scoring them. That line up wasn't balanced

To be fair to Moyes, I was surprised when he brought on Benrahma instead of a ‘safer’ option like Fornals. It did seem like a positive substitution.

Yesterday was a defensive masterclass with clinical counter attacking. Bowen’s goal, in its entirety, will be one of the goals of the season for me.

Antonio chasing back to regain possession, cuts inside and plays a beautiful ball out wide to Benrahma. Benny knows there’s nobody with him so he bides his time and waits for Bowen, who is busting a gut to get in their box. A majestic cross field pass on a sixpence, a ridiculous touch from Bowen, followed by a subtle one and a beautiful spinning finish into the far corner.

Absolutely glorious!

Pagey - it won't help us do that picking Soucek ahead of Benrahma giving us less outlets..

Fraser, it was reminiscent of a couple of seasons ago when we were flying in the league and getting great results with clinical counter-attacking football. Done well, it’s so hard to defend against.

Our squad was crying out for some pace and craft. Kudus will add more pace and Paqueta along with JWP will add the craft.

Leicester did the same when they won the league. Mahrez and Vardy were deadly on the counter. If we can replicate that level of performance I think most of us will be happy. It’s just the last 18 months where Moyes seemed to forget about the attacking element!

LAF I too believe our back line have improved and that individuals are tracking back to help the defence. I really like that clearance header that Danny Inges carried out in the final stages of the game, I really thought that was going in. Even Areola congratulated him for that. As Alan Shearer said " Preventing a certain is as good as scoring a goal".
Hopefully this tight team spirit would see us though for the rest of the season.

Pagey - Yes that's a fair point.. But I rewatched last week's after getting back from the game and it still was, we were lucky and didn't look in control at all, this just looked comfortable

fraser - We defended well, were organized, picked them off on the break and could have easily had 5, yet some are moaning about it? Utterly mental.

Just watched the whole game for the first time, comfortable easy 3 points and not a hard watch at all, credit to Moyes and the team.

Let's see how we approach the Luton game

What you ideally want is for your defence to stop goals going in and you attack to put them in. Long may that continue.

Re: ⚽ Brighton v West Ham - Official Match Thread - Preview
Im not against a solid defensive foundation but it cant be 80% of our game in every game. The thing about the low block and defending so deep is that we're constantly riding our luck defensively and have to be clinical in taking the few chances that come our way to win games. We got a bit lucky against Chelsea and although we absolutely DID deserve yesterday based on the excellent counter attacking but we did look shaky in the last 15 mins and to be honest it could perhaps have been 3-3 bar some excellent saves.

As I said, Luton will be interesting. I expect us to push out more and less sitting back and soaking up pressure. We have the players to do that and it will be good to see us go after teams a bit more, although its their first game back in the big time at home so it will be all about them. Hopefully we don't play the fall guys like we did at Forest last season!
